In our first series of healthy and unhealthy competition we talked about how effective competition can be in team building when properly channeled.
The second installment in our series on competition looks at some of the disadvantages of unhealthy competition, (not like there are advantages anyways)
Getting validation and attention: When competition is motivated by a need to get attention and validation from others, then it's possibly fueled by insecurity and self-doubt. This weaker foundation negatively impacts the individual's ability to perform and compete at the height of their potential. At the same time, it’s so narrowly self focused that it forgets about the broader team or community.
Belittling others: Competition can become even unhealthier when it’s propelled by the need to tear others down. It’s one thing to be motivated by self-interest, but another thing to start actively sabotaging the performance of others. This ill will and destructive activity not only hurts others but also eats at the core of the person dolling it out.
Being obsessed with the idea of winning or winning at all cost is another sign of unhealthy competition. Unhealthy competition puts a disproportional amount of emphasis on the outcome, rather than valuing the process or the journey involved in getting there, Of course, we all go into competition with the intent of winning. However, training and athletics aren't all black and white; there's more to it than just winning and losing.
When winning becomes the only source of satisfaction, you know you have a problem. If a person's feeling of self-worth and personal accomplishment is linked with another person’s ability to do something, then you will never be satisfied.
Truth is,, no matter how good you think you are, there will always be someone who is better than you..
Can you relate to any of the points above
